MOMof2 asked:

Hello all, My son is 5 1/2 and participated in T Ball this season. He hated it. He was so bored out in the field. He is not very coordinated, and has really thick glasses which probably didn’t help. I know about Hockey, Football, Soccer, Swimmng and Martial Arts. I think he would do better with one on one. He’s a little too immature for team sports. Should I try boxing? What else is there?
Lonniehoney, It was the coach. I don’t think he gave any direction at all. I tried not to judge because I have never done it. But, after our first game, seeing how the coaches on the other team did, I was right. Our coach didn’t do squat.

matzaballboy – My son does not have a computer or a TV in his room, and rarely gets to use ours. I know what you are saying about the sports. I will let him chose, but I want to know what’s out there for him to chose from.

Perhaps he could be a long distance runner. Be careful because he is still growing, but many races have awards for age groups that young. Nelson_DeVon

Something that will help him feel good about himself. Both of my kids started swimming at a young age. Many places have ribbons for participation and they can compete against their best times. I think 5 is a little too young to start boxing, especially if he’s not very coordinated. Phillip B

try football with the city leagues’ I believe they start taking the kids at your son’s age if not they start at 6 some will make acceptions so just ask. Shanika1999

Martial Arts may be the best one. He should get one on one as well as group attention. Besides, it helps with self esteem and self defense. Hope this helps. christina_m_taft

Well I suggest soccer. Technically it is a team sport, but really, it’s not like that many kids (at that age) think about much more than scoring. It’s also one of the most simple: “Just kick it that way”

And as far as being too immature for team sports, well that is probably true for many five year olds; I think the whole purpose of sports at that age *is* to be on a team, and not just for exercise. So I highly encourage something that is a team sport. shapedy

    Hi,

As a team coach I can tell you that your son was probably bored because the coach and the assistant didn’t do a good enough job. The emphasis for 5-year olds should be on fun, Fun, FUN, and, oh yeah, MORE FUN!!

Skills come if the child sticks with something long enough.

My son, for an example, is about as unathletic as they come but he’s LOVED T-Ball, Soccer, etc. I just got through with our T-Ball season (we had 15 kids) and NONE of them wanted the season to end.

So, my suggestion is that you get your child into any of the activities you’ve listed but make CERTAIN that you also check out the coaching staff.

By the way, I’m not really ‘into’ sports either. I’m pretty much a geek but I know enough to keep active and that fun is the spice of life.

there is dance. i know you may have gender ideas about what is appropriate for boys but dance is a great coordination-builder.
There is tennis. There is figure skating, not just ice hockey.
There is gymnastics. You need something where he doesn’t have to wait and can be active and moving all the time. There is also bowling. Sufi

Hi, have you checked into maybe tumbling classes or beginning gymnastics to help with his coordination? You can check your local parks department, Jr. college and community centers usually offer classes as well as YMCA/YWCA. ravencollegework

ya know Mother some kids can’t play sports, some kids don’t want to play sports. don’t be that Mother let your kid pick his own sport. and when he is ready to play sport he will know and he will let you know also. You might want th get his a*s*s* out from in front computer or the tv and practice some sport with him. matzaballboy

    Backpacking.

I started my children before they could walk. I carried them along with our gear. It wasn’t long before they wanted to do the walking.
Last weekend I started my great niece and nephew (8&7 years old) on a 12 mile hike. Seems long but they out did me. We climbed to a level of over 5000′ to a look out tower on Mt. Rainier. They loved it. They got to play on a snow field and throw rocks in the river. We crossed a river 6 time on our trek. There were only 2 bridges. The other crossings were on rocks and log jams. We slept in a log shelter at Lk. George. We crossed Round Pass at 4000′ elevation. It was 95 degrees but when we got to the lake we put our hot, tired feet in to cool off.
From the lookout we could see the main part of Mt. Rainier right in our faces and off to the south we could see what’s left of Mt. St. Helens.
I’ve been backpacking for 35 years and have introduced many people to this sport. Some have taken to it and others havn’t but I believe it to be a very healthy, invigorating and fun sport of discovery and adventure. Sig
