The sports involving car & bike races also making the globe warm and not giving any benefit to human living hood. Why don’t they be banned ? Is there any use of such races to mankind ? Instead we can encourage other sports.

While we’re at it we can give up eating meat because meat production is the #1 cause of pollution in the world. So what if we can’t enjoy steak anymore? Or we could force everyone to keep the temperature down during the winter to reduce emissions. Everyone can keep warm with a blanket, right? Seriously, why should we be forced to give up so many things for something that, in my opinion, isn’t even true. There is scientific evidence that contradicts what these environmentalists are claiming. Global warming is more about politics than science. Jake

Individual moves like this will make little actual contribution to global warming, and wouldn’t address the actual problem. Suggestions like this do, on the other hand, give people the impression that ruining everyone’s fun and de-industrialising is the aim of the economists and scientists calling for an overhaul of the way we do things.

The car races themselves use very little resources compared to, say, the tens of thousands of people attending that race. The problem is that the way most societies do things are unsustainable. If those tens of thousands of people got to the event on cars, trains and buses fueled by a renewable fuel like bio-diesel; if the factory that made the plastic cups they drank out of was powered by nuclear energy; if the farmland that produced the food and drink they eat there managed properly, instead of being treated like a desert for 3 months of the year, and most of the plastic and metallic waste from the event was recycled, there’d be no harm in sending 20 cars around a circuit burning the dirtiest fuel they can find… which they don’t – most racing cars run on methanol, which is one of the cleaner energy sources we have.

As it stands, most football games probably generate more CO2 than your average car race. Polar Bear

Polar Bear gives a very good answer and I would add that a lot of technical innovation comes out of motor sports including safety devices, informal testing of mehcanical components for strength and durability, and even efficiencies such as fuel types and consumption. Although we wouldn’t immediately think of snowmobile racers, etc. as contributing anything to the advance of science and so on, and what it contributes may be rather less efficient than lab testing, the numbers of people working on winning combinations of equipment amounts to a great deal of garage research.

Just for the record I am very concerned about the environment and the possible impact of our activities on climate and I’m not a huge fan of most racing per se, but I am entertained by it from time to time. It’d be weird to see new NASCAR style race series develop around hybrids and electric vehicles, but wouldn’t that be interesting as specialty manufacturers began developing components specifically for hybrids to win races with. I’d like to see the race fans for that, I wonder what they’d eat and drink in the stands instead of beer and hot dogs. Brie and a light Zindfadel? And what kind of HAT would the eNASCAR Richard Petty wear? booM

We should not isolate sports using fossil fuels. What is the percentage of contribution to global warning by such sports? It is not true that there is no contribution to mankind by such sports. Car racing and bike racing does contribute to better design ideas, and keeps the competitive spirit up. However, there should be emphasis on fuel efficiency and use of alternative fuels. Other sports can be encouraged, but their environment impact need to be evaluated. Kishore

some changes have to be accepted and i support u on ur idea…NICE!!!!…..but the world cannot change as we want it to.it might take yearssss……but m not telling its not possible…it might take time thats it……….and if ur starting some campaign lemme know i’ll join……….. shanmugam

Well while you are at it, why not give up the comfort of zooming around using your own vehicle and always take public transport or carpool? Don’t use air conditioners, don’t travel by air unless it’s a matter of life or death (certainly no vacations abroad). Always switch off lights when you leave a room and definitely reduce the time you spend on your computer. Reduction of global warming, like charity, starts at home. So do all the above and over time you will definitely make as much of an impact as you were hoping to make by banning sports using fossil fuels. And if you decide you can’t do all this then lets not presume to preach what we can’t practice. geetha s
